Its the Finals countdown

15 more days before my finals end... Yeah! Hmm... think I'm thinking a little too far. It hasn't started yet i'm thinking about it ending... I've got a take a step at a time. If not i may trip and fall. and its gonna be a real hard hard fall. And no way am i going to trip, unless something super-unnatural happens.? :-s

I believe that behind everything, there's something that's driving it. Things just don't happen by itself. It takes 2 hands to clap. 'Ying' and 'Yang' comes together to give you 'Qi'. Lacking either 1 will give you urm.... 'Fei Qi' :-) Another of 1 of my nonesense. Hey! whats life without nonesense?! Hahha

"You mean this is not a therapy session?"

Brian Schdamore, founder and CEO of Vancouver-based-junk-removal firm 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, asked an interviewee for a call-centre position what the toughest situation he'd ever had to face was. The man told a very personal story about a friend who had died. "He went into a great deal of detail, and the story was very emotional for him," says Schdamore. "He started to well up."

Why is it a red flag: "We were worried he wouldn't be able to separate his personal life from his work life," says Schdamore. "It felt more like a therapy session - and I was not his therapist. While I could emphathise, it just wasn't the place to share that."

WAR

Time has arrived where there's nothing to do except to study. War has begun. Date of ceasefire will be 15/11/06 @ 1745pm GMT+10. This is the only war where I can return triumphant... Hmm... (who goes to fight in a war, where you can only lose???) I can almost smell victory, but I shall not let complacency get over me. Hard work = Success.

7 more days. Its coming. Its getting closer, and closer. If I study hard, I believe i can make it. But i believe there's a little somewhere where luck plays a part. But I will not take the chance. Hard work. Hard work.

"My last boss was such a jerk!"

In the course of interviewing a job applicant, Gail Pierre-Jerome of Drake International, a human-resources solutions company, asked how the candidate had fared in her last position. She was very critical of her boss, says Pierre-Jerome. "She said he was a great guy, but he provided no sense of direction. The whole thing was very negative."

Why is it a red flag: Being critical of a previous employer rarely sits well with a potential one. First of all, says Pierre-Jerome, it makes them wonder what you'll have to say about them when you move on. Secondly, it can be an indicator of an underlying negativity. And finally, if you're applying for a job in the same industry, there's always the chance your interviewer knows the person you're slagging. In this case, the previous boss happened to be Pierre-Jerome's husband.

Vroooom Vroooom Vrooom

9 more days to my 1st 2 papers. 1 in the morning, 1 in the evening. Stupid planning.... Got to do and redo past year papers. It'll help. Its almost similar. ;-)

Last burst of energy! few hundred more meters to go! Cheong ah! Don't give up! You can do it!... Sounds like i'm running my 2.4km in camp. How i hate army... Well, not really all the 1 year 11 months that i'm inside.

The things that i hate about army are:
1. Field camps. I shudder at the thought of it. Even 1 night in the jungle will get my morale down. So down that i refuse to respond.
2. Tio Tekan without/not knowing reason. Its like out of nothing, you'll face the ground. Then don't know what happened. Kena whacked. "1 for all, all for 1". Why is it always "all for 1" when it comes to punishments and "1 for all" when it comes to rewards? I don't understand.

Well, I'll still need to "return" 3 months of my life to army after my studies. What can i do in 3 months? turn operational? Participate in NDP 2008? Haha... Army is whole lot of rubbish.

Whats with army and me?

"The salary minefield"

Richter was almost certain that the candidate he had sent to a local firm would get the sales director position he was applying for. "This guy had been through several interviews. He was personable and skilled, and they really wanted to hire him," Richter says.
However, during the candidate's final interview with the president of the company, the issue of salary arouse. "What are you looking for in compensation?" asked the president.
"Well," replied the candidate. "I wouldn't come for anything less than X amount."
"Our salary range is lower than that," the president replied. At that, the candidate stood up and headed for the door.
"Well then," he said, "I guess this interview in over."

Why is it a red flag: The candidate appeared arrogant and rude, and that's just for starters. "It made him come across as if money was the most important thing," says Richter, and that's a turnoff for employers. For the same reason, the first question you ask about a company should not be: "What are the salary and benefits?"

1 down, 4 more to go

Team project is over! Amazingly, the team got 70/100! Pretty good mate! got such a high mark for a product that only managed to operate in a single aspect. Cool! Think we've got a good marker! He's not engineering trained, didn't know about the technical aspects of the product. Hahah. Didn't go around with a multimeter, measuring power consumption (it's supposed to last for 12 hours), like the other markers. Phew!

Now I'm left with 4 modules - Math2000, Math2010, Stat2010, Elec3300.
2 weeks time and it's crunch time. Work hard for 3 more weeks! Study! Study! Study! No time to lose!

"I single-handedly doubled my company's profits last year"

Interviewers commonly ask for an example of your lastest achievement on the job and how you were able to manage it. Many interviewees respond by exaggerating their contribution to their current employer in the mistaken belief that it makes them sound better, says Michael Harding, president of Inline Reference Check in Caledon, Ontario, Canada.

Why it's a red flag: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, asserts Harding, and if the employer discovers that you're not telling the strict truth, it damages your credibility. On top of that, neglecting to give any credit to the other people involved is a good indicator you might not be a good team player.
And according to Adeline Tan, a recruiter from the Singapore arm of global staffing firm Aquent, candidates who blow their horns too loudly in a bid to appear confident end up looking desperate.

Work

Phew... worked straight for close to 19 hours.... was so tired that i literally dragged myself home. So tired... sucks man! And the end product looks like this!

12 weeks of planning and executing the "gameplan". It was supposed to be Infrared activated, but due to certain unforseen circumstances, it is wired.

Tomorrow is "Demo Day" or "D-Day" as I call it. Don't know what will happen. And after that, it'll be preparations for the finals. 3 more weeks of slogging and it'll be over!

I've lost some weight! to my delight! Hahaha!!! i'm now at 79kg. Must be due to the many meals that I'd missed for the past few many many weeks. Don't think I've the discipline to keep it that way. :-). I'm certain the magical 8 will appear soon! after the exams that is.

“Sorry, I haven’t had time to google you yet.”

Richter actually had a job candidate say this to the president of a well-known consumer products company she was approaching for a job.
Why is it a red flag: Not only does this make you sound unprepared but Richter says, “it makes you look like you’re not interested, you’re not thorough and you’re not much a planner or thinker.
On the flipside, don’t pretend to know about everything about the position. "Treating the secretary with respect!"

Sywak had been impressed by the charm and vitality of a recent interviewee. He was accomplished, efficient, and overall a good bet for an avaiable position, she believed. But after the applicant left, her receptionist dropped a note through the door. Her impression of the man could have not been more different.
He was, the receptionist told Sywak, abrasive, dismissive and rude, demanding to see the recruiter immediately. He paced the office impatiently and suggested that the receptionist was being uncooperative when she advised him that Sywak was still busy. "Don't you know who I am?" he had demanded.
Why its a red flag: Sywak specifically asks her receptionist to let her know about rude behaviour on the part of job applicants. "Our customers come from all walks of life," says Sywak, "and every one of them has to be treated with dignity and respect. If you can't even be civil during the interview process, you won't likely be able to do that with customers."

Time's running out

Had a very tough patch the last couple of days. Was trouble-shooting my project till very late. Very tired... Team project sucks. Its gonna be a tough module. Due date's on Monday, but the product is not yet up, totally. It should be enough to give me a pass though.

Wow... couple of weeks more and it'll be exam time. Got some time off today from the lab as there's a limit to what we can do. Had my 1st proper meal since.... tuesday morning... Had a sweet mandarin orange last night in the wee hours, missed breakfast and lunch. Amazing... I'm almost a muslim. :-) But i'm not fasting. I still drink water.

Its really difficult working with people thinking in different wavelengths. Got to learn to adapt, adjust, accept and reject. Everyone's got their own way of doing things. So do I. So, there must be certain gives and takes. But to me, "its better to give than to take." I don't know why. Just some of the many mottos that i adopted during my close to 8000 days on earth. But sometimes, there will tend to be people whos' motto is opposite of mine. :-)

Sometimes, it doesn't pays to give more than take. People might climb on top of you and shit on your head? Hhahha. Hope I won't get to experience that. It sure will feel shity.

Just in case you didn't know, tagboard is active, but if you're using Mozilla Firefox, the board is ALL THE WAY down the page.... There's no problem viewing from IE. Anyone out there who knows how to solve this problem????

Think tonight will be my only free night for this week. :-( If you see any further blogs by me, it might be from the lab! Haha... but i doubt i'll be blogging away when i should be doing something ;-) Cheers mate!

"My alarm clock didn't go off!"

You only get to make a first impression once, says Shirley Sywak, a senior recruitment manager for Canadian telecommunications company Telus. If you're late for your interview, it may be impossible to dispel the negative vibes.
Why is it a red flag: Being late, says Margaret Leong, a recruitment consultant for LaSalle-SIA college of the Arts in Singapore, implies that you don't care very much for the position you're interviewing for.
Most important of all, adds Sywak," it's a 1st level indicator of what we might expect on the job. If you arrive late for the job interview, what are the chances that you'll be on time for work? It puts a question mark in everyone's mind."
However, that doesn't mean you should throw in the towel if you're running late due to genuinely unavoidable circumstances. "If a person phones beforehand to inform us that he'll be late, and if he can give a valid reason, then we would certainly give him another chance," says Leong

Doctors have long acknowledged that irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is extremely tricky to treat. Caused by abnormal contractions in the colon, symtoms (including abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation), can be debilitating over a lifetime.
Anti-spasmodic medication can help, but recent research at the University of Manchester suggests that hypnotherapy may provide a more effective, drug-free alternative.
During 12 one-hour sessions over 2 years, 250 patients were taught how to gain control of their gut activity. With a 70% success rate (which was higher among women than men), the therapy helped all symptoms, unlike drugs, which reduce only a few.

Worked through the night of Friday the 13th, got home at about 2.30 this morning. Was real tired. Things weren't going my way. Nothings does. So how? suck thumb lo, and wait for a miracle to happen.

Was real disgusted by my software enginner-to-be. He was like wanting things this way, that way, and we (electrical engineers-to-be) say okay lo. Maybe thats a wrong move. Was supposed to be in the lab right now, but the components that we wanted were not on sale from private vendors, got to wait till monday and get it from the school's workshop. Cham liao lo....

The heart-healthy reputation of olive oil is well known, but eating a variety of plant oils can give extra health - and flavour - benefits.
Avocado - Rich in vitamin E for healthy skin. Enjoy its subtle, nutty taste cold, or cook with it.

Flaxseed - Mild-flavoured and full of essential omega-3 fats that fight inflammatory disease. Omega-3s are destroyed by heat, so use cold in salads, smoothies and yoghurt.
Grapeseed - A flavour and high smoke point; good for salad dressings and for cooking at high temperatures.
Hemp seed - Derived from cannibis, but won't get you high. Hemo seed is a good source of omega-3s and has a mild, sweet, and nutty flavour; use cold.
Pumpkin seed - Has a toasted flavour. It may alleviate prostate and bladder problems. High in Omega-3s so use cold.
Sesame - Dark sesame oil adds strong flavour to Eastern-style cooking. high in vitamin E; may work to reduce blood pressure.
Walnut - High in antioxidants and omega-3s. Adds a nutty taste to baking and salad dressings.

Nice thing about my Uni is that they provide "Safety Bus" as well as "escorts" during the night. Its free! the bus will send you to your doorstep! Or if you would rather walk, someone to accompany you if you're scared. How nice. Left the project lab at around 9pm. Was on the usual route when we saw the safety bus. Was too tired and lazy to walk back home, so we hopped into the bus! Coincidentally, the driver is one of my fello student in one of my class. Don't know if he'd recognised me. Haha. Trip took about 5 minutes, cos there're other people as well. Haha.. So fun... I'm sure there'll be more of this free rides home in the future!

Complications during pregnancyin which placental blood flow is impaired increase the risk of early heart disease, a recent Canadian study shows.
Dr Joel Ray and his team at the University of Toronto followed more than a million women who had no previous history of cardiovascular disease for an average of 9 years after they gave birth. Overall, 75000 women were diagnosed with "maternal placental syndrome".
It was found that those who had the syndrome had double the relative risk of premature cardiovascular disease. The risk was further increased if the women's baby had restricted growth or died in the womb, or if the women had pre-existing risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure, obesity or smoking.
Dr Ray said maternal placental syndrome should now be considered as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in women. "Affected women should have their blood pressure and weight or waist measured 6 months postpartum, and a healthy lifestyle should be emphasized," he advised.

What can you do to recall your dreams more often and interpret them more clearly? The experts offer there tips:
Incubate and idea. Before you go to sleep, consciously think about a topic or a person you'd like to dream about. Pose a questions thats troubling you and see how your dream responds to it.
Keep track. Next to your bed, place a pad and pen, or a tape recorder or laptop, to record your dreams as soon as you wake up.
Try a awake naturally, without the help of a alarm clock or barking dog that can disrupt your dream cycle. If your schedule doesn't allow you to sleep in during this week, begin your dream journal on a weekend or during a vacation.
Wake up slowly. For the 1st moment after you awaken, lie still and keep your eyes closed, because your dream may be connected to your body position while you slept. Try to recollect the dream, then store it in your memory by giving it a name like "Late for an exam" or "My date with Ashley Judd". When you rise, immediately write down as many images, feelings and impressions as you can.
Connect the dots. To better interpret your dreams, try to make connections with your recalled dream and recent events. Do you recognise people from the present or past? Can you detect any themes from the dream? Look for patterns over several dreams that might help explain an individual dream.
Change the outcome. If you have recurring nightmares that make it difficult to sleep, try to change the endings. Once you awaken from a bad dream, visualise a change in the action to create a more positive outcome. If you are trapped, try to fly. In your dream, you can do what you want.
Be patient. It may take days or weeks before you're able to recall your dreams in detail, but the experts advise to keep practising. Dream memories are fragile, and trying to recall all the plot twists and turns on consecutive nights seems to have a cumulative effect.

True Facts

Its true! I need at least 7 hours of sleep a day. or else, I'll be lifeless. just like today. was in school for about 11 hours. Discussed tutorial (to be handed in today) and to do some projects.

Its true! Australians are laid back. At least for Queenslanders. Everything is on the dote. 11am means 11am. 4pm means 4pm. Wanted to use the drilling machine to drill some holes at about 3.45pm. (Off-work at 4pm) It was nice for the fella to ask about hole size, material, etc, but alas! he politely asked me if i can come back tomorrow? What can i say mate? No? Asked him what time is the workshop open? "half-past 7", he said. "Cool!", i replied. "I'll come tomorrow."

Its true! Weather here in Australia is peculiar. Its hot 1 moment and the next moment, its cold. strange... but i'm starting to get used to it already. Strangely, i'm able to adapt fast! Real fast... Just love the low humidity here. :-) Not missed too much about Singapore. Maybe just a little? ;-)

Who would have dreamt that the resonant sounds of a clarinet could ease you into a good night's sleep? That's only the case, however, if you learn to play the instrument yourself.
Swiss researchers ran a trial involving 25 adults with moderate obstructive sleep apnoea. They found that playing a wind instrument like the clarinet for 25 minutes a day for 4 months helped reduce snoring and the daytime sleepiness associated with the condition, which causes the throat to close and the patient to stop breathing momentarily during sleep.
Melbourne sleep expert Professor Matthew Naughton says the circular breathing used in playing wind instruments could improve upper-airway muscle tone and exercise the glottis, which may be a good thing in snorers.

Sneezing occurs when something gets up your nostril and irritates the nerves, which notifies your brain to send a message to your nose, diaphragmand chest to expel the irritant. If you're asleep, the part of the brain that receives such a message - the lateral medulla - is relaxed, and your sensory input won't stimulate it unless the irritant is really strong - for instance, pepper.
But if the irritant were that strong, it would wake you up first, so you won't be sneezing in your sleep, says Dr Richard Wassersug, professor of anatomy and neurobiology at Dilhousie University in Halifax and scientist-in-residence for the Discovery Channel of Canada.
The very definition of sleep, he says, is that there is a decrease in responsiveness to external stimulants - unless you somehow happen to inhale pepper, of course

I'm bored??? hahah.. A long, long 1.

Those absent-minded shapes you draw in long, boring meetings help relieve tension, say psycologists. But if your boss accuses you of not paying attention, cite the experiment that suggested that students who doodled in lectures took in as much as note-takers and more than those who just listened.
But be careful, your scribbles may give away more about you than you realised. "You often read a doodle like a book," says psycologist Dr Ho Law, who uses drawing with clients. "Doodling is a creative outlet that reflects a person's state of mind."
Drawing can unlock mental blocks and help you think more creatively. Try starting with a stick figure and doodling around it to indicate what's happening in your life. Use names, numbers, figures, faces, signs and different colours. Keep you pen moving for 10 minutes with your mind relaxed. Look at the paper later: solutions may come to you.
Drawing to the left of the page suggests reserve and a focus on the past. Drawing on the right shows sociability and a focus on the future. Doodling in the middle shows a need for attention. Psychologists also ascribe meanings to different symbols

Boats, planes and cars: A longing to get away from it all; a need to go away on holiday.
Arrows: Upward arrows show ambition and horizontal ones show perceptiveness. Arrows pointing in all directions reveal an open mind.
Noughts and crosses: If you play games with yourself, it may reveal a competitive personality.
Stars: People who draw stars tend to be idealists . A 5-pointed star indicates ambition, while 6 points represents a capacity for concentration.
Squares and triangles: Geometric shapes reflect an organised brain and clear thinking processes.
Pretty faces: You have a sociable and sunny disposition.
Animals: You like to protect others
Hearts: You're a sentimentalist.
No doodles: A blank page doesn't mean lack of creativity; non-doodlers tend to be precise, direct and to the point.

Mooncake Festival

Just got home. Was doing project again... a couple of weeks more for early hand in bonus marks... 1 mark/day mate. Didn't stay long in the lab. about 3 hours. My software enginner was tired. Had dinner at nearby (10 min walk from Uni) Chinese-Vietnamese stall. After that, went to BWS (Beer, Wine, Spirits) store. Its a place where they sell liquor. There's BWS everywhere! When there're shops, there's a BWS somewhere. Bought blueberry vodka at A$9.99 for 4. Share it with 2 other friends.

Why all of the sudden buy vodka? Cos it's the mooncake festival! haha. 以茶代酒。No... its 以酒代茶... Haha... Friends bought some mooncakes from Chinatown and down to the park!

Moon was blocked by clouds, think it'll rain tomorrow....

There're a few bbq pits at the park, and they are free! There's light till i don't know what time. Its still on when i left at 1230am. Think might go there after the exams. got 2 months to slack after the exams.

Didn't really ate any mooncakes cos i don't really like them... kinda dry and sweet... Uncomfortable for my throat.

Still got tonnes of work to do, tutorials to hand up.

Got quite a high mark for the 2nd practical session today. Didn't do a single thing... The group was too big... cos 1 of the machine was spoilt. so 2 groups have to share 1. Pracs take up 20% of the total marks, and there'll be 2 more to go. hope i can get 18/19 out of the 20%

Downing a few beers in the pub may give you more than a bad hangover. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine say Guinness stout had more heart-healthy flavoniods and triggers more anti-clotting activity than light-coloured beer. And beer hops contain xanthohumol, a flavonoid that may help ward off some cancers, say Oregon State University researchers.
Hops may also fight hot flashes and osteoporosis. But you'd to drink a whole keg to get enough of the flavonoid to make a difference - and we don't recommend it at all! Luckily, there may soon be a "health beer" with enhanced concentrations.
For now, porter, stout and ales have the highest levels. Raise a toast to the hearty hop.

Flying

1.27am local time: I'm supposed to be sleeping right now. I was very tired and sleepy, and went to bed at 10.30 last night and was fast asleep when i was abruptly woken up at 11+ 12. I simply hate my room. Can't seem to lock any noise out. Walls are plaster-thin. Even with my door tightly shut, I can hear everything, everyword, every sentence, every story. My room is between the kitchen and the toilet. Whenever someone goes to pee, I can hear every single drop (and I meant every). Then came the flush! The flushing system in my toilet is pretty strong. At least it sounds strong. So everytime someone flushes, its like an alarm clock ringing. So can you imagine how many times i have to wake up in the middle of the night? Feels kinda sucky. But at A$100/week, what do you expect?

21.19pm: Few more minutes and it'll be thursday. Draft timetable for my final exams is out! 1st paper starts in a month's time. 2 papers to be exact. damn... 1 statistics and the other 1 is maths - ODE. Reaching the end of the semester, everything seems to be in a rush. Need to hand in this, hand in that! busy, busy! headache, headache! I can do it! YES I CAN!!!

Yoga can reduce stress and build muscle. Now researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle say it may even help you lose weight by helping you eat less. Lead author Dr Alan R Kristal studied 15500 peope aged 53 to 57, who reported on their exercise and weight history from their 20s onwards.
Normal-weight volunteers who practised yoga regularly (at least 30 minutes once a week for 4 or more years) gained 1.5 kg less than non-yogis over ten years. Overweight people lost over 2kg, and those who didn't do any yoga gained over 6 kg.
"Yoga makes you more aware of your body," says Kristal. "So when you've eaten enough, you're sensitive to feeling full, and this makes it easier to stop." Beginners should look for a class that teaches the fundamentals beore rushing through tougher moves.

If you are planning to get a pay rise or want to secure a business deal, try to bargain with someone of the opposite sex. European researchers have found that women negotiate better with men and vice versa, but that both men and women become over-competitve when dealing with someone of the same gender.
Talks between a mixed gender pair lead to significantly more co-operation, resulting in mutually beneficial business outcomes, the researchers say.
They've suggested that companies can use this new knowledge to their benefit, by strategically selecting the gender of their representatives.

How attractive are you? It's not just about the clothes you wear or the car you drive. It could also depend partly on your name.
Linguist Amy Perfors of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US placed photos with prominent names on the "Hot or Not" website, which allows viewers to rank strangers' photos. Each photo was posted at different times with different names.
She found that men labelled with names including "front vowels" - sounds produced in the front of the mouth such as the "aaa" in Matt - were rated as more attractive than photos labelled with "back vowel" names, such as the "aw" in Paul. The opposite was true for women.
But if you're thinking of changing your name, don't go too far - the study also found men with women's names were rated least attractive of all

Just a question: Is the quality of food (taste) proportional to the amount of noise you make in the kitchen? "Zhi Char" stores are always full of noise.

How can we cut down on salt and still enjoy a healthy, seasoned meal? Try these instead:
1. Cloves. Health benefits: Can ease nausea and may help protect against cancer. Where to use it: Fruit salads, stir-fries, bean soup, baked fish, vegetable dishes.
2. Garlic. Health benefits: May lower cholesterol and help prevent cancer. Where to use it: Stews, soups, stir-fries and pasta sauce.
