Complications during pregnancyin which placental blood flow is impaired increase the risk of early heart disease, a recent Canadian study shows.
Dr Joel Ray and his team at the University of Toronto followed more than a million women who had no previous history of cardiovascular disease for an average of 9 years after they gave birth. Overall, 75000 women were diagnosed with "maternal placental syndrome".
It was found that those who had the syndrome had double the relative risk of premature cardiovascular disease. The risk was further increased if the women's baby had restricted growth or died in the womb, or if the women had pre-existing risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure, obesity or smoking.
Dr Ray said maternal placental syndrome should now be considered as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in women. "Affected women should have their blood pressure and weight or waist measured 6 months postpartum, and a healthy lifestyle should be emphasized," he advised.
